The Flathead Valley Hockey Association saw a record turnout for its annual "Try Hockey for Free Day," which gives children a chance to get on the ice and try out the sport to see if they like it.

According KBZK 7 Bozeman, this year's "Try Hockey for Free Day" was so successful that the association ran out of hockey equipment to loan out.

"This is literally the best thing. I love it. I come out here, and I just look and smile because I love seeing these little kids," Jessica Crofts, president of the Flathead Valley Hockey Association, told KBZK 7 Bozeman at the event on Nov. 15. "When I started coaching, I started coaching this little age group is called mites, and it was my favorite. There's nothing more fun than watching these kids have fun out here on the ice."

The association hosts the event once a year to give children between the ages of 4 and 14 a shot at testing out the sport to see if they'd be interested in joining a team. Coaches and experienced players were on hand to help kids of all skill levels out on the ice.

Due to the event's record participation, the Association hopes to hold another similar event.

The Flathead Valley Hockey Association was created to form and manage youth hockey programs at the Woodland Ice Center in Kalispell.
